Peugeot 5008

The Peugeot 5008 is a spacious, practical, well-built and surprisingly good-to-drive seven-seat people carrier. It’s a great choice in the large family cars category as its economical with lots of space.

The most economical engine in the Peugeot 5008 range is the 1.6-litre diesel. This returns 65.7mpg and costs just £30 a year in road tax, thanks to CO2 emissions of 113g/km. 

Insurance groups vary – the small petrol sits in group 13, while the 1.6-litre diesel is group 16 or 17.

Audi Q7

The huge Audi Q7 is powerful, has a fantastic interior and can be surprisingly affordable to run for such a large car.

It is a vast SUV with seven seats and plenty of kerb appeal and will carry 7 passengers with ease.

The Q7 comes with a choice of three diesel engines – two versions of a 3.0-litre TDI engine and a more powerful 4.2-litre engine. Volvo XC90

The second-generation Volvo XC90 is an impressive SUV, with lots of space and style as well as incredible safety technology. It has a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, with an impressive 97% score for adult occupant protection.

It comes with plenty of technology too, with a huge Sensus high-definition infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard. With three rows of seats, it allows seven to easily travel in comfort.

All models have four-wheel drive as standard controlled through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Among the most affordable versions is the 2.0-litre B5 diesel engine, which returns up to 44.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 154g/km.

Vauxhall Zafira

The Vauxhall Zafira is good value and immensely popular for those in need of an affordable, large family car.

It has an excellent driving position with very good visibility in all directions. Inside it has a neat design, with plenty of space, head and leg room. The first two rows and the three middle row seats slide back and forth independently.

There’s a reasonable range of engines on offer; the car can be had with a 1.4-litre petrol unit that would appear worryingly modest were it not a downsized turbo capable of 138bhp. The diesel offerings are the 132bhp 1.6 CDTi Ecotec and the 168bhp 2.0-litre CDTi , which is the most powerful engine available and good for a 9.1sec 0-60mph time, a 127mph top speed and modest CO2 emissions of 137g/km. A six-speed automatic is available with the higher-powered diesel and the 1.4 petrol.

Citroen Grand C4 Picasso

The Citroen Grand C4 Picasso is good to drive, easy to use, practical, well equipped and genuinely innovative.

It handles very well for a car of this size and is reasonably refined. Its light steering makes parking and low speed manoeuvres a piece of cake!

The engines are strong, including three diesels – two 1.6-litre units in differing states of tune and a more powerful 2.0-litre one – as well as a 1.2-litre petrol that’s both punchy and smooth.
