Most modern cars are now well equipped to protect the occupants in an accident, with some even having safety technology to prevent an accident from happening in the first place, therefore, choosing a used car based on NCAP safety can be a difficult decision. Safety equipment such as electronic stability programmes (ESP), ISOFIX child-seat mounts and anti-lock brakes (ABS) are common on most modern cars, but some have even newer safety technology such as autonomous braking (AEB) and lane-departure warning systems.

Mercedes Benz A-Class

Winning Euro NCAP ‘Small Family Car’ class in 2018, the Mercedes Benz A-Class scores a five-star rating with 96% for adult occupant safety. It also includes an impressive safety kit as standard including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and Mercedes Attention Assist system which can actually monitor the driver for signs of fatigue!

Audi A6

The Audi A6 earned a five-star NCAP safety rating in both 2011 and 2018. In 2011, it achieved adult and child occupant scores of 91% and 83% respectively. In 2018, this increased to 93% and 85% respectively.

BMW 3 Series

In 2012, the BMW Series 3 achieved a 5-star NCAP safety rating with adult and child occupancy scores of 95% and 84% respectively. This increased in 2019 to 97% and 87% respectively still achieving a five-star NCAP safety rating.

VW Polo

Scoring five stars in an Euro NCAP test back in 2017, the Volkswagen Polo is an impressive, and surprisingly spacious, supermini that has a great collection of safety assets hidden beneath its sleek, urban run-around exterior.

It’s packed with VW safety innovations, including its signature Front Assist, as well as Blind Spot Monitoring and City Emergency Braking systems.

Ford Galaxy

Named safest large MPV in 2015 with a five-star NCAP safety rating, and an 87% adult and child occupancy score, it remains a great and very safe choice for families looking for a larger family car. Despite its boxy appearance, the fourth-generation Galaxy is a solid drive and includes safety measures like enhanced vehicle stability systems and various driver assistance features included within Ford’s MyKey technology.

VW T-Roc

In 2017, the VW T-Roc earned a five-star NCAP safety rating safety by scoring an excellent 96% for adult protection and 87% for child protection.
