Government to review response to severe weather
Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis today announced an independent review of the transport sector's response to this winter's severe weather.
The UK has experienced its worst winter for 30 years, with blanket snowfall and prolonged periods of sub-zero temperatures, creating challenging conditions for transport providers and the travelling public.
The review will be conducted in two phases: the first will identify measures that can be implemented relatively quickly in preparation for next winter 2010/11; and the second will consider preparedness for severe winter weather in future years. Phase one will be published this summer followed by phase two in the autumn.
The review is part of a Government drive to ensure that local authorities are prepared for future severe weather. Last week the Government announced an additional £100 million for local authorities to help pay for repairs to potholes. This builds on the trebling of funding to local authorities over the last 10 years for road maintenance from £265m in 2000-01 to £809m in 2010/11.
