Motorists ignore speed cameras

Reckless driving continues despite road safety measures. Three quarters of UK drivers admit to speeding, despite an increase in speed camera numbers.
Nearly half of the motorists polled said they only slowed down when they were actually in sight of a camera.
The study, carried out by vehicle management company LeasePlan, also revealed that 2 per cent of drivers admit to ignoring speed cameras altogether with the hope of not getting caught and a further 2% admitted to avoiding driving on roads with cameras.
“These figures draw attention to the significant number of drivers failing to take road safety issues seriously,” said David Brennan, managing director of LeasePlan UK.
“Speed cameras are designed with safety in mind, but they don't seem to be acting as enough of a deterrent to a section of the driving public.”
The cameras have been criticised in recent months, due to the estimated £100m they generate in fines each year.
A poll conducted by the RAC found that 72% of drivers think speed cameras are “more about raising revenue” than road safety.
Brennan added: “Clearly, speed cameras alone cannot be relied upon to enforce speed limits, so education needs to play a prominent role in promoting the importance of road safety, changing the attitudes and behaviour amongst drivers that speed.”
